Description

The digital euro isn't live. But the clock just started.

On 14 July, the European Central Bank confirmed the pilot: 36 PSPs selected out of 50+ applicants, testing starts H2 2027, 12 months, 4 use cases (P2P online, P2P offline/NFC, 2 merchant scenarios). The enabling EU regulation is still being negotiated. Nothing is final, Everything is moving.

In my view, the design is genuinely well thought through. The real question isn't "can it work" but rather "where does it fit."

Wero is already live across France, Germany, Belgium. Card schemes aren't going anywhere. Now a public digital euro enters the same wallets, the same checkout screens, the same merchant contracts.

So: does digital euro compete with Wero and Europe's private initiatives, or become the settlement layer underneath them? Can "public money, private UX" coexist cleanly or does one lose relevance within a few years?

I put together a carousel on what the digital euro is, how it works, and how it compares to Wero, explained simply, no jargon. Swipe below.

Want the longer, technical version (FR or EN), regulatory status, the funding "waterfall," merchant fee caps, and what interlinking with private schemes could look like? DM me and I'll send it over.
